why fast during Ramadan

On June 14, I sent out an appeal asking for others to join me in fasting during Ramadan. I thought it might be helpful to outline what this will entail for those who are interested.

First of all, it’s not a complete fast. I’m not asking anyone (including myself) to completely abstain from food and drink for 30 days. Rather, the ‘rules’ are simply no food and drink between sunrise and sunset. The rest of the time you can eat and drink however much of whatever you want.

I plan to focus on five prayer points during this time:

  1. repentance on behalf of all Christians for the lack of love and concern for Muslims as exhibited by the lack of missionary activity and lack of willingness to be martyred for the sake of their salvation
  2. pleading with God for a deluge of signs, wonders, dreams, visions, etc. to call Muslims to himself
  3. intercession for peace in the numerous places of violent conflict in the world involving Muslims
  4. breakthrough in contextualized movements of Jesus communities in Muslim cultures
  5. the establishment of a vibrant church among the Cham, a Muslim ethnic group in Cambodia

I, or a teammate of mine, may create or adapt a detailed prayer schedule to help you stay focused during this season of prayer. Of course, no one is bound to follow my prayer points or schedule, what’s most important is that people begin to fast and pray on behalf of Muslims.

Please let me know if you want to join me in this fast or if you have any questions about this.

There already is a prayer schedule in place for Ramadan. It is for folks to pray for different countries, though, so I don’t know if you are interested in that.
